Are you in your final year of your polytechnic course? Are you feeling lost, not knowing what will your next step be?
Don't Worry! Cause you're not alone. Every adolescent has to take this step in his or her life, which is choosing the next career or education path. I was once afraid to take the next step, totally clueless and there was no guidance. Good thing for you guys, the polytechnics hold annual career fairs for students to find out more about further education and job opportunities. I had the chance to attend NYP’s Career & University Fair last Friday and it was a really pleasant experience!

Various booths at the career fair:
Every booth had professional, informative banners and brochures prepared for you.

They provide a quiet sitting environment for enquires:
This is a good chance for you to clear all your doubts. It’s a benefit to have adults to guide you through.

Massive crowd who attended:

One of the many booths that caught my attention was the Singapore Institute of Technology as it has a wide range of courses to choose from. SIT is publicly-funded institute that seeks to provide an industry-focused university education in partnership with local polytechnics and reputable overseas universities to produce highly desired graduates for growth sectors of the economy.
Professor Tan Chin Tiong is the President of SIT. He was a founding member of SMU and was Provost and Deputy President. He spent 20 years of his career at NUS where he was head of the School of Management, Chairman of Executive Programs of the Faculty of Singapore Executive Program and Director of the NUS Office for Continuing Education. He has even co-authored marketing textbooks with Philip Kohler! With such an esteemed leader at the helm of SIT, the students are assured of an unforgettable education path.

Why do I think that SIT is a great choice?
Because SIT was established by the Singapore Ministry of Education (MOE) to ensure that polytechnic graduates are given the opportunity to upgrade their expertise and stay relevant in today’s dynamic economy. SIT is dedicated to offering diploma holders such as yourself, a direct and more affordable route to a reputable specialised degree.

In consultation with government agencies and industry partners, SIT focuses on bringing in degree programmes under the following five main disciplines:
  1. Engineering & Applied Sciences
  2. Health Sciences
  3. Design
  4. Interactive Digital Media
  5. Hospitality
Degree Programmes that SIT is offering include:
1) Engineering & Applied Sciences

SIT partners three very prestigious overseas universities to offer a whole slew of Engineering and Applied Sciences degree programs.

  • Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Mechanical Design Engineering
  • Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Mechatronics.
  • Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Chemical Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science with Honours in Food & Human Nutrition
  • Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Marine Engineering

  • Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Mechanical Design and Manufacturing Engineering
  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering

2) Health Sciences
With a rising ageing population, the demand of qualified Health Science Professionals is on the rise. In partnership with The University of Manchester, which was founded in 1969, as the first university in England to establish a Nursing degree. In collaboration with SIT, UOM offers:
  • Bachelor of Science with Honours in Nursing Practice
3) Design
As a design student, I believe that everything in our daily lives is designed to our needs, from a toothpick to a vehicle. In this modern society, people not only go for quality goods, but also the aesthetic beauty of it. In SIT, design is not only about sketching and painting, it relates to reality with mathematical formulas and basic technical skills to provide the necessary skills for you before entering the design world.

4) Interactive Digital Media
Interactive Digital Media is what that brought you Toy story and Transformers. In partnership with DigiPen Institute of Technology, as one of the long-standing pioneer and global leader in this field. In collaboration with SIT, DigiPen Institute of Technology offers:
  • Bachelor of Science in Game Design
  • Bachelor of Science in Real-Time Interactive Simulation
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts in Digital Art and Animation
  • Bachelor of Arts in Game Design

5) Hospitality
Hospitality is one of the world’s largest industries. In partnership with The Culinary Institute of America, where Celebrity Chef Anthony Bourdain graduated from, SIT offers
  • Bachelor of Professional Studies in Culinary Arts Management
Also, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, offering one of the leading hospitality management programmes in the US is offering the Bachelor of Science in Hotel Administration.

Picking out interactive digital media brochures to further understand the courses.
My favorite would have to be the interactive digital media degree programs. Digital media is an up and coming industry, most recently seen when Lucasfilm, and Double Negative set up shop here in Singapore.  In Singapore, as an urbanized country, there is an increased demand for visual effects specialists and designers. Interactive Digital Media is everywhere; digital simulation, 3D-graphics, rendering, and game design, there’s a never ending list of what the degree programs with DigiPen can offer.
